White Sox sign Viciedo; Tex and Nationals?

• The White Sox have signed 19-year old Cuban phenom third baseman Dayan Viciedo to an $11 million deal.
  
• The Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Angels, and Giants are all in on CC Sabathia, although New York is the only team known to have made an offer so far. It has been rumored that the Dodgers might be preparing to offer Sabathia a six-year deal worth somewhere around $120 million. San Francisco appears to be a long shot at best.
• Mark Teixeira is reportedly seriously considering signing with the Nationals. Washington has not made an offer yet, but if it did, it would probably be close to a $200 million contract. The Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, and Orioles are other potential suitors. Rumor has it that Los Angeles could offer him an eight-year, $153 million deal.
• Things are still very quiet on the Jake Peavy front. The Padres have had talks with the Yankees, but nothing is imminent. Many expect the Braves to re-enter the sweepstakes at some point.
  
• Raul Ibanez is a very popular name in the free agent market, with as many as a dozen (or more) teams giving him a look. The Marlins, Phillies, and Mets comprise three of his most likely landing spots.
• Orlando Hudson is also drawing plenty of interest, with the Yankees, Indians, Marlins, Mets, and Dodgers all potential destinations for the second baseman. Hudson is reportedly seeking a five-year, $50 million deal. I'm not sure anyone will give him that kind of money, though.
• The Yankees and Brewers could both pursue David DeJesus. Milwaukee would only do this if it does not bring back Mike Cameron.
• The Mets are very reluctant on offering Francisco Rodriguez a four-year deal. If Seattle makes J.J. Putz available, they may very well turn their attention to him, as well as Brian Fuentes. Also, Aaron Heilman either wants to start or be traded. So long, Aaron.
  
• St. Louis signed Trever Miller to a two-year deal.
• A.J. Burnett is reportedly looking for a five-year deal. I don't even know if the Yankees would give him that much. New York, the Red Sox, and the Orioles are all interested.
  
• There is speculation that the Blue Jays might look to trade Roy Halladay. Unless they get an unbelievable haul in return, I can't see them doing it. There was a rumor that the Dodgers could be interested, but it was quickly squelched.
  
• Scott Boras is looking for a Barry Zito-type contract for Derek Lowe. What a surprise.
• It seems like Houston is trying to move Jose Valverde. Cleveland could be a possible trading partner.
  
• Rafael Furcal is conjuring up a solid amount of interest from numerous teams, with the Athletics aggressively pursuing him. The Cubs have also talked to the shortstop. Furcal is looking for a four-year, $40 million deal.
  

Yanks and Padres talking; Giants may spend

• The Yankees are in discussions with the Padres about Jake Peavy; aybe a deal centered around Philip Hughes and Austin Jackson? New York is also expected to make offers to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
• San Francisco has a shot to become a big player in free agency. The Giants have already talked with the agents of Manny Ramirez and Mark Teixeira and have interest in Rafael Furcal. Still, we see this every year from San Francisco, and nothing ever happens.
  
• Raul Ibanez is intrigued by the Marlins, and it does seem like Florida would be willing to spend money on a corner outfielder.
  
• Contrary to previous reports, the Mets are not interested in CC Sabathia. His price-tag is just too much for them.
• The Angels seem keen on keeping Mark Teixeira, and they may blow him away with an offer he can't refuse pretty soon.
• The Cubs and Randy Johnson have mutual interest.
• Relief pitcher Juan Cruz could draw a lot of interest in the open market, with the Indians, Phillies, and Giants already being mentioned as potential suitors. Other notable free agent relievers include Arthur Rhodes, Jeremy Affeldt, Joe Beimel, and David Weathers. The Cardinals are pursuing relief pitching more than any other team in the league right now.
  

Yankees make offer to CC; Braves move on

• The Yankees have reportedly offered CC Sabathia a six-year deal worth $140 million. The Mets, Angels, and Dodgers hae all expressed interest in Sabathia, and the Brewers may still attempt to bring him back.
• According to sources, Manny Ramirez has told people close to him that he would love to play for the Marlins. However, that doesn't mean he will cave and accept a two-year deal from them. The Dodgers withdrew their two-year, $45 million offer to Ramirez today. They are still expected to try and re-sign him, though. The Angels are intrigued by Manny, but the general consensus is that Ramirez will not end up there.
• Minnesota has submitted an offer to Casey Blake. It is yet not known what the terms of the contract are, however.
  
• The Braves have gotten fed up with the Padres and are no longer pursuing Jake Peavy. For now, anyway. This could bring teams like the Yankees and Angels back into play, and it obviously opens the door for the Cubs. Atlanta is now looking at free agent pitchers A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Ryan Dempster. Burnett seems to be intrigued by the Braves. However, the Blue Jays reportedly are ready to offer the 31-year old right-hander a four-year, $45 million contract.
  
• Just because the Yankees acquired Nick Swisher does not mean that they won't make a play for Mark Teixeira. Adam Dunn may also be on the radar.
• The Rays and Cubs have both inquired about Jeremy Hermida, but it doesn't look like the Marlins are willing to give him up.
• The Dodgers are giving Randy Johnson a look.
  

Marlins deal Gregg; Yankees get Swisher

• The Marlins traded Kevin Gregg to the Cubs for relief prospect Jose Ceda. Not surprising. What is surprising is that Florida is going after Orlando Hudson. I imagine that Dan Uggla would then move over to third base and Jorge Cantu would shift over to first. The Fish have repeatedly stated that they are not trading Uggla unless they are blown away by an offer. The same goes for Jeremy Hermida.
• The Yankees acquired Nick Swisher and minor-league pitcher Kanekoa Texeira from the White Sox, sending pitching prospects Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez along with Wilson Betemit to Chicago.
  
• Although it looked like the Padres and Braves were closing in on a deal for Jake Peavy last night, they still are not close. The rumored trade was Yunel Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, either Jo-Jo Reyes or Charlie Morton, and Blaine Boyer or a minor-league pitcher for Peavy. The Cubs are also still in on the right-hander.
• Toronto has interest in Jason Giambi and Brad Penny. The Blue Jays have also talked to San Diego about Khalil Greene.
  
• Nothing new with the Mets and their search for a closer; Francisco Rodriguez is their number one choice, but if he doesn't sign, they will attempt to bring in Brian Fuentes. If New York fails to ink either of the two, it will look at trades for Bobby Jenks, Huston Street, J.J. Putz, and possibly even Kerry Wood.
• The Astros may very well end up trading Jose Valverde.
• Seattle is keeping an eye on Jeremy Affeldt, Jason Giambi, Joe Crede, and Ken Griffey Jr.
• The Yankees will make an offer to CC Sabathia tomorrow believed to be in the six-year, $150 million range.
• It would take a lot for the Twins to trade Delmon Young.
• It doesn't look like Randy Johnson will be spending another year in Arizona.
  

Week 10 NFL Power Rankings

1. New York Giants- I think it is pretty clear that the Giants are the best all-around team in the NFL, ripping through their first round of NFC East games and continuing to physically overwhelm opponents. Don't look now, but Brandon Jacobs is putting together an MVP-caliber season.
2. Tennessee Titans- The Bears dared Kerry Collins to beat them on Sunday, and he did just that, throwing for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Still, despite being the only undefeated team remaining in the NFL, you have to be somewhat skeptical of Tennessee in the postseason.
3. Carolina Panthers- Although the Giants are in a class of their own in the NFC, the Panthers are clearly the second best team in the conference. Their defense has been outstanding, and DeAngelo Williams is having a breakout season running the football.
4. New York Jets- Could we see a New York/New York Super Bowl? The possibility is looking pretty strong, as the Jets appear to be clicking on all cylinders. Brett Favre has finally figured out the offense, and Thomas Jones has been revitalized. A huge divisional matchup with New England looms on Thursday.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers- There are some concerns with Pittsburgh, particularly along the offensive line. That might have something to do with the putrid numbers Ben Roethlisberger has posted over his last three games (one touchdown, eight interceptions).
6. Baltimore Ravens- Joe Flacco has looked very good the past several weeks, and the defense, as usual, has been phenomenal. Don't be shocked if the Ravens wind up winning the AFC North, as the Steelers are very banged up at the moment.
7. New England Patriots- Somehow, some way, Bill Belichick always manages to find different ways to win ball games. This past week, it was BenJarvus Green-Ellis (who?) rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown. Their Thursday matchup with the Jets could decide the AFC East.
8. Washington Redskins- It looks like they are the same old Redskins; good enough to win 10 games and make the playoffs, but not good enough to go deep into them. Clinton Portis is listed as 50-50 for this week's game againt Dallas. They need him desperately.
9. Arizona Cardinals- Although they didn't look too good in barely beating the pathetic 49ers on Monday night, you have to give them credit for rallying back and holding San Francisco down at the goal line. Kurt Warner is the MVP of the NFL so far.
10. Indianapolis Colts- That was a huge win in Pittsburgh this past weekend, and it probably saved their season. The AFC South title is out of reach, but with the relative easiness of the rest of their schedule (they play HOU, CLE, CIN, and DET), they could very well sneak into the postseason as a wild card.
11. Atlanta Falcons- How about Matt Ryan? This kid certainly does not look like a rookie, posting 130+ quarterback ratings the past two games. He has been outstanding, as has Michael Turner. Atlanta could very well be for real.
12. Minnesota Vikings- All of a sudden, they have won four of their last five games and are tied for first place in the NFC North. But, like always, the Vikings' lack of a passing attack will be their ultimate downfall, even if they make the playoffs.
13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- They have looked pretty bad in their past two games (they had a bye this week), losing 13-9 at Dallas and then needing to mount a large comeback to beat the lowly Chiefs. A game against Minnesota with playoff implications looms on Sunday.
14. Chicago Bears- Who knows; if Kyle Orton is healthy, they might have beaten Tennessee this past week, but he wasn't, and now the Bears have fallen into a first-place tie with Minnesota. Fortunately for Chicago, they have an easier schedule than the Vikings the rest of the way.
15. Philadelphia Eagles- I think it's pretty obvious that the Eagles are never going to win anything with the way they are constructed. It might finally be time to end the Donovan McNabb era and start from scratch. They just aren't good enough.
16. Miami Dolphins- Kudos to Anthony Sparano (and Bill Parcells) for transforming a 1-15 into a playoff contender overnight. Take a look at some of the teams remaining on their schedule: OAK, STL, SF, KC. January football is a realistic possibility in Miami.
17. Denver Broncos- They might be one of the worst division leaders we've ever seen, but nonetheless, they are in first place, and that's all that matters. Still, I just don't see Denver holding off San Diego with that horrible defense.
18. San Diego Chargers- It wasn't pretty, but that was a season-saving win against Kansas City, even though they should have never been in that position against the Chiefs at HOME in the first place. In any other division, they'd be toast, but they play in the NL West of football.
19. Buffalo Bills- Buffalo has been exposed over its past five games, losing four of them. It's become pretty apparent that the Bills were simply feasting off their schedule schedule early on and were really never that good. They'll need a pretty big turn-around to make the postseason.
20. Dallas Cowboys- Tony Romo returns this week against Washington, but is it too late? The Cowboys have a brutal schedule the rest of the way, and Romo doesn't play defense, either. And if the offensive line can't provide any protection, it doesn't matter who lines up behind center.
21. Green Bay Packers- They have been one of the most inconsistent teams in the NFL this year, and, consequently, one of the most injury-plagued, as well. To make things worse, Nick Barnett is now out for the year with a torn ACL. Still, the Packers are only a game out.
22. Jacksonville Jaguars- What has happened to the Jaguars? They have gone from a team nobody wanted to face to a middle-of-the-pack squad with no identity. Their biggest problem may be their lack of a pass rush, as their sack leader, Daryl Smith, has only 2.5 of those.
23. New Orleans Saints- Someone tell Drew Brees that screaming in your teammates' faces does nothing, especially when you're the one throwing three picks, one of which was taken back for a touchdown. The loss to the Falcons was the dagger in the heart for the Saints.
24. Cleveland Browns- It looked like they were on the verge of turning things around, but then they go and lose two straight to take themselves out of the playoff picture. Brady Quinn looked solid in his debut, but Cleveland has to do something about that defense.
25. Houston Texans- Too bad Matt Schaub is done for the next few weeks, as he was starting to turn his miserable start to the season around drastically. Either way, the Texans may have drafted one of the biggest steals of the 2008 class in Steve Slaton.
26. San Francisco 49ers- Give them credit for fighting hard and nearly upsetting the Cardinals in Arizona. But, obviously, a lot of changes need to be made here, starting at quarterback; Shaun Hill is not San Francisco's signal-caller of the future.
27. Kansas City Chiefs- They may have a worse record than some of the teams below them, but you have to like the way they've played the past three weeks. They could easily be sitting at 4-5 right now, as the Chiefs have lost their last three games by a combined eight points.
28. Seattle Seahawks- Oh how the mighty have fallen. The Seahawks are a mess, with question marks at running back, wide receiver, and even quarterback (Matt Hasselbeck isn't getting any younger). Their secondary has also been subpar this season.
29. St. Louis Rams- That 47-3 loss to the Jets may have been the most pathetic performance in the history of the franchise. I have never seen a team have that much trouble holding on to the football. Poor Jim Haslett.
30. Oakland Raiders- Al Davis has officially lost his mind, and this organization is spiraling out of control. The only solace the Raiders have is the fact that JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden could serve as cornerstones to a possible turn-around (and I use that term loosely).
31. Cincinnati Bengals- Carson Palmer now looks like he is done for the season, and their ground game has been downright awful. Oh, and the defense isn't too good either. Still, there is no denying that there is some talent here, and they aren't in as bad of shape as some other franchises.
32. Detroit Lions- With the first pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select Michael Crabtree, from Texas Tech University. Sorry; I couldn't resist.

Manny to the Marlins?

I knew Marlins' GM Larry Beinfest had something else up his sleeve when he made that trade with the Nationals yesterday. It now appears that Florida is going to enter the Manny Ramirez sweepstakes and make a serious run at the outfielder, according to two solid sources.

Ramirez has a house and family in Miami, and, per these sources, has wanted to play for the Marlins for years.

More to come from FLA; ATL losing patience

• There is definitely more to come from the Marlins, who have already unloaded Mike Jacobs, Josh Willingham, and Scott Olsen. Kevin Gregg is probably next. Don't discount the possibility of Florida going after some fairly big-name free agents, either.
• The Padres don't want to re-sign Trevor Hoffman. There is a good chance that Hoffman retires, but the Marlins have actually been mentioned as possible suitor. I doubt Hoffman would close there, though, as they have their closer of the future in Matt Lindstrom.
  
• Atlanta is growing pretty tired of waiting around for San Diego, as the Braves have been trying to pry Jake Peavy away from the Padres for weeks. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the most recent deal that was discussed was Yunel Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton, or Jo-Jo Reyes (more likely Reyes) for Peavy. San Diego might be holding out for top prospects Jordan Schafer and Tommy Hanson, but Atlanta has repeatedly stated that it is not trading them.
• The Angels are being very careful about negotiating with Mark Teixeira, as they are worried that Scott Boras might take their offer and use it as a benchmark for other potential suitors, such as the Yankees and Red Sox. It looks like Los Angeles also plans to make a run at CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett.
• Arizona seems to be shopping Miguel Montero, who has been a bit of a disappointment thus far.
• SI's Jon Heyman says there is still a slight chance that the Dodgers trade Russell Martin.
• According to Francisco Rodriguez's agent, Paul Kinzer, there are three or four teams in the running for Rodriguez's services. The Mets are certainly a possibility, but Kinzer and K-Rod are obviously going to have to come down on their ridiculous asking price.
• The White Sox are shopping Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko, Javier Vazquez, and Bobby Jenks.
  

Marlins send Olsen, Willingham to Nationals

In the second signficant trade of the 2008 off-season, the Florida Marlins have sent Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham to the Washington Nationals for Emilio Bonifacio, pitching prospect P.J. Dean, and minor-league shortstop Jake Smolinski.

Unless the Marlins are going to flip Bonifacio, a 23-year old second baseman, to another team in a separate deal, this doesn't make much sense for them, in my opinion. They have already said that they are not moving Dan Uggla, and they have Chris Coghlan, one of the best second-base prospects in baseball, waiting in the wings. Maybe this trade is part of something bigger for Florida? Could they be pulling off a blockbuster trade for a big-time player, maybe like Magglio Ordonez? Or, maybe they are planning on changing Uggla's position? There was talk about him moving to third base before the 2008 campaign began (and with the trade of Mike Jacobs, Jorge Cantu would then move over to first base). Only time will tell.

Still, you cannot doubt anything GM Larry Beinfest does. He is one of the best, if not the best, in the business at finding unexpected talent in unusual places.

Matt Holliday to Athletics almost final

UPDATE: Gonzalez, Smith, and Street would be the players Colorado receives in this deal.

According to ESPN, SI.com, FOX Sports, and Yahoo! Sports, the Oakland Athletics have agreed to a trade with the Colorado Rockies that would land them Matt Holliday. The exact details of the deal are not yet known, but speculation says that pitching prospect Greg Smith is certainly headed to the Rockies. Carlos Gonzalez and Huston Street could be on their way to Colorado, as well. Another name that was discussed was minor-league pitcher Brett Anderson.

Cardinals make offer for Holliday

• St. Louis is reportedly offering Colorado Ryan Ludwick, Skip Schumaker, and Mitchell Boggs for Matt Holliday. I can't see the Rockies pulling the trigger on that one, as Ludwick, the centerpiece of the deal, may very well have had a fluke 2008 season. The Phillies, Athletics, and Nationals are all pursuing Holliday, as well.
  
• Padres' GM Kevin Towers has narrowed it down to three potential suitors for Jake Peavy: the Braves, Cubs, and Dodgers, with Los Angeles being the least likely of the three. That means the Yankees were never really serious about the 27-year old right-hander. Still, you can never discount a last ditch attempt from Hank Steinbrenner. ESPN's Buster Olney says that Peavy will be dealt before Thanksgiving.
  
• The White Sox are very interested in Cuban third baseman Dayan Viciedo. As if it weren't obvious already, this makes it clear that Chicago has very little interest in bringing back Joe Crede.
• The Twins have interest in Casey Blake, perhaps as a backup plan if they cannot pull off a trade for Garrett Atkins. Minnesota is also looking at shortstops, including Yunel Escobar and J.J. Hardy.
• Tampa Bay is taking offers for both Andy Sonnanstine and Edwin Jackson. If I had to guess, I'd say at least that one of the two will be moved.
• Much like I stated previously, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports does not expect the Nationals to make any big signings or trades this off-season. They have been rumored to be in the running for Matt Holliday, and there is even talk that they are thinking about making a run at Mark Teixeira. Adam Dunn has also been discussed.

Phils, Cards pursuing Holliday; Young to SD?

• The offer the Dodgers made to Manny Ramirez was of two years and $45 million.
• The Twins seem to be willing to trade Delmon Young to San Diego for Kevin Kouzmanoff. Why Minnesota would even think of doing such a thing is beyond me.
  
• The Mike Cameron to the Yankees' rumor has cooled off. The Brewers are still talking to New York about a potential trade involving Cameron, but Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin says nothing is imminent. The original rumor was Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy for the center-fielder.
• According to sources, the Phillies and Cardinals are the frontrunners in the Matt Holliday sweepstakes. Philadelphia would probably have to give up pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco, and St. Louis would most likely have to part with top outfield prospect Colby Rasmus. Ryan Ludwick has been discussed, though.
• Boston is looking for a catcher, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden of Texas both on the radar. The Red Sox are also taking a gander at Bengie Molina, Jeff Clement, and even Ivan Rodriguez. On an unrelated note, Boston is also interested in Rocco Baldelli.
• The Mets are looking to get rid of the likes of Aaron Heilman, Pedro Feliciano, and Scott Schoeneweis. As far as replacements, we already know that New York is very fond of Brian Fuentes. They have also talked to the White Sox about Bobby Jenks. Kevin Gregg is another possibility, as well as Huston Street and J.J. Putz. Joe Beimel, Juan Cruz, and Chad Cordero have been mentioned, too. Francisco Rodriguez will more than likely be too pricey for Omar Minaya.
  
• Padres' GM Kevin Towers expects to deal Jake Peavy prior to the Winter Meetings. The Braves still appear to be the frontrunners, now offering up Gorkys Hernandez in a deal that probably includes Yunel Escobar and Jo-Jo Reyes.
• The Astros have re-signed LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year, $3.5 million contract.
• Atlanta has asked the Marlins about Scott Olsen. I can't see Florida trading him to a division rival, though. The Fish have also talked to the Rangers about Olsen.
• The Rockies have been talking to the Twins about a deal that would send Garrett Atkins to Minnesota for Matt Cuddyer.
• Cleveland is shopping Kelly Shoppach. The Indians are also trying to bring in Huston Street.
• Texas picked up Hank Blalock's $6.2 million option for 2009.
  

Loads of MLB rumors today

• As expected, the Yankees have been very busy:
• A source mentioned a potential three-way deal between the Yankees, Mariners, and Rockies that would have Matt Holliday landing in New York. Hideki Matsui would go to Seattle, whom would send John Rowland-Smith to Colorado. The Yanks would also have to send Robinson Cano to the Rockies.
• The Yanks are trying to work out a deal with San Diego for Jake Peavy, with Philip Hughes and Austin Jackson being mentioned as part of a potential package.
• New York also appears very interested in Milwaukee's Mike Cameron. One rumor has the Yankees sending Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy to the Brewers for the former Gold Glove outfielder.
• The Bronx Bombers have talked to the White Sox about Nick Swisher, perhaps as a backup plan if they cannot sign Mark Teixeira.
• It looks like the Yankees plan on signing Damaso Marte to an extension. They declined his 2009 option.
• New York is willing to re-sign Andy Pettitte to a one-year deal, although Pettitte recently stated he is looking for two. And this is nothing new, but the Yanks want to sign two free agent starters out of CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe. Lowe is the least likely of the three to sign, in my opinion.
• Wilson Betemit is on the block.
  

• Plenty of news on the Phillies as well:
• According to SI's Jon Heyman, the Phillies has been the most aggressive suitor for Matt Holliday. The question is whether or not they have enough ammo.
• There have been rumblings that Philadelphia will listen to offers for Jimmy Rollins. Still, I do not see him getting moved.
• If the Phils aren't able to re-sign Pat Burrell, expect them to turn their attention to Rocco Baldelli.

• And the Mets:
• The Mets' top target seems to be Brian Fuentes. Fuentes' agent reportedly proposed a four-year, $44 million deal. That might be a little too expensive for GM Omar Minaya.
• Chad Cordero is a backup plan if New York can't sign Fuentes.
• Carlos Delgado asked the Mets for a contract extension for 2010, but was denied.

And now the rest of the league:

• Could the Marlins be interested in Russell Martin? He is quietly being discussed within the organization. Still, he is most likely out of their price range and would command far too much from Florida in return (think Sean West). The Fish have also considered bringing Brad Penny back.
  
• The Cardinals are also pursuing Matt Holliday. They could offer a package built around Colby Rasmus.
• The Dodgers have offered Rafael Furcal a two-year deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $25-30 million. Eight other teams have expressed interest in the shortstop, including the division-rival Giants.
• San Francisco seems to be listening to offers for Matt Cain; this doesn't mean he's getting dealt, though. Bengie Molina is a more likely trade candidate.
• Some feel that the Athletics could make a run at Matt Holliday. They certainly have the prospects to do it.
• The Nationals, of all teams, are preparing to make a very considerable offer to Mark Teixeira. Either way, I can't see them out-bidding teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, or Angels.
• The White Sox will listen to offers for Bobby Jenks. It will take a lot to pry him away, though.
• According to Ken Rosenthal, the Braves are offering the Padres Yunel Escobar, either Jo-Jo Reyes or Charlie Morton (most likely Reyes), and a top prospect for Jake Peavy.
• Minnesota has talked to Colorado about Garrett Atkins.
  

Dodgers make offer to Manny

• GM Ned Colletti said that the Dodgers have made an offer to Manny Ramirez that would be the second-highest annual average salary in MLB history. The question is whether or not the deal has enough years for Scott Boras to consider it. More than likely, it's of the two-year variety. Los Angeles also declined Brad Penny's 2009 option, instead opting for a $2 million buyout.
  
• The Yankees will make a colossal offer to CC Sabathia, who is clearly their first priority in free agency. If New York can't ink Sabathia, they'll turn their attention to the likes of A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Oliver Perez. Also, the only way the Yanks will attempt to sign Manny is if they can't sign Mark Teixeira. Surprisingly enough, they are also interested in bringing in a catcher, perhaps one from Texas. Finally, New York would still deal Robinson Cano if it could get pitching in return. If this occurs, then the Bronx Bombers would turn around and make a run at Orlando Hudson.
• Detroit will search around the league for a closer. Kevin Gregg, Huston Street, and J.J. Putz have been mentioned as possibilities.
• Derek Lowe seems to want the Red Sox, maybe even at a discount. But, will Boston be willing to pay him?
• The Mets are looking at Ryan Dempster and Jon Garland. They have also talked with the Rays about Edwin Jackson and Andy Sonnanstine.
• St. Louis is shopping Ryan Ludwick. Smart move, as they would be selling very high. Atlanta has been mentioned as an interested party.
• Contrary to an earlier report, the Braves have not put Jeff Francoeur on the trading block. If they did try to deal him, they would not get much in return taking his horrendous 2008 season into account.
  
• One rumor says that the Rays have talked to the Rockies about Matt Holliday, but Tampa Bay isn't a very likely landing spot for Holliday due to their financial constraints. Several teams have also called the Rays about B.J. Upton, although a trade involving the young center-fielder is unlikely.
  

Peavy rejects trade; Martin not on trade block

• The Braves may be willing to shop Jeff Francoeur. The Royals appear to be interested.
• It looks like Rafael Furcal is going to re-sign with the Dodgers, but don't count out the White Sox.
• The Marlins have talked to the Rangers regarding catcher Max Ramirez. Florida would be willing to deal Scott Olsen. There has also been talk that the Marlins are considering bringing Carl Pavano back to Miami. Yuck. One more note: the Fish will probably re-sign Arthur Rhodes.
• Dodgers' GM Ned Colletti has said that Russell Martin is not available despite rumors suggesting otherwise.
• Jake Peavy reportedly rejected a trade to an American League team with a small ballpark. Texas, perhaps?
• The Blue Jays are attempting to trade Lyle Overbay to the Mariners. Toronto would have to pick up some of his salary, though.
• The White Sox are not only shopping Javier Vazquez, but Nick Swisher, as well. I can't either player fetching much of a return.
• Peavy is not a very hot topic for the Cubs, according to Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times. Chicago is, however, very interested in CC Sabathia. The Cubs are also looking at Brian Roberts and Raul Ibanez.
• Pitching is clearly the number one priority for the Mets. They are very interested in Derek Lowe, and the general consensus is that they would like to bring Oliver Perez back. New York also inquired on Edwin Jackson of the Rays; Chicago's Vazquez remains on the radar, as well.
• The feeling now is that Matt Holliday will definitely be traded this off-season, perhaps in December; that should allow Colorado ample time to find the best offer for their left-fielder.
• Oh, and Scott Boras is asking for a Jorge Posada-type contract for Jason Varitek. In other words, he wants at least a four-year deal worth $50 million. Talk about ludicrous. Then again, nothing Boras does surprises me anymore.
  

Yankees call Astros about Berkman

• The Yankees apparently called the Astros to ask about the availability of Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt. Houston stated that neither was being traded. Could this mean that New York is keen on signing Manny Ramirez, so instead of spending money on a free agent first baseman (Mark Teixeira), they are trying to get one via trade? The same goes with trading for Oswalt instead of inking CC Sabathia.
• The Mets are interested in Raul Ibanez. They eyed him around the trade deadline, as well. New York is also looking at Javier Vazquez, whom White Sox GM Kenny Williams said will almost definitely be dealt.
  
• According to San Diego GM Kevin Towers, Jake Peavy has now approved potential trades to two AL teams. One would assume that one of the two is the Yankees; maybe the other is the Angels?
• Greg Maddux is likely to retire.

Today's MLB tidbits

• The Nationals are actually looking to spend some money this off-season. They are mainly looking for a clean-up hitter, with names like Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder, Matt Holliday, and Mark Teixeira being thrown around. Teixeira, Fielder, and Holliday are all highly unlikely, as Teixeira would be looking for too much and Washington doesn't have enough ammo to offer Milwaukee or Colorado in a trade for either of its two power hitters, but Dunn might be a possibility.
• One NL executive said he wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees signed Manny Ramirez, Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett; neither would I. New York signed Sergio Mitre today, by the way.
• Boston wants Teixeira, and it looks like they may very well try to deal Mike Lowell to make room for him.
  
• Speaking of Sabathia, the Brewers have officially given him a multi-year offer believed to be in the $100 million range. They also exercised Mike Cameron's 2009 option.
  
• The Rockies aren't bringing back Brian Fuentes. The Mets, Angels, and Cardinals are all considered potential suitors for the closer.
• It appears that there are currently three teams involved in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes: the Braves, the Cubs, and the Dodgers.
